Ron earned All-American honors twice at USC and was named one of the Top 50 USC players of all time. In 1960, he was the first-round pick of both the NFL’s Baltimore Colts and the AFL’s Boston Patriots, who traded him to the upstart San Diego Chargers. Ron was an All-AFL standout selection, seven times as a tackle and once as a guard. His coach with the San Diego Chargers, Hall of Famer Sid Gillman, said, “Ron Mix was one of the greats of all time. I think he’s the greatest tackle who ever lived.” He participated in eight AFL All-Star games and was unanimously chosen for the AFL’s all-time team in 1969. Ron played for the Los Angeles Chargers (1960), the San Diego Chargers (1961–1969), and the Oakland Raiders (1971). During his 10 years with the Chargers, he was assessed for only two holding penalties. His many accolades include making 28th on the 1998 Pro Football Digest’s 100 greatest players of all-time list, and being named to the Chargers Hall of Fame in 1978, the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979, and Sports Illustrated’s All-Time Dream Team. Nicknamed the “Intellectual Assassin” while a standout for the Chargers, Ron used his off-season time to complete a law degree, and became an attorney after retiring from football. Ron was elected a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.
