Richard funded the world’s first facility dedicated purely to track and field at the University of California, Berkeley. Goldman Field honors Richard’s father, Richard Samuel Goldman, a Golden Bear competitor under Walter M. Christie, legendary Cal track and field coach from 1901 to 1932. A prominent insurance broker, and founder of the Goldman Fund and the Goldman Prize, Richard Goldman has also served on the boards of the San Francisco Ballet, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the World Affairs Council of Northern California, the Commonwealth Club, and the San Francisco Public Utilities and Port Commissions. Goldman has also been instrumental in protecting San Francisco Bay and its waterfront, and helped establish the Tuolumne River Preservation Trust. The Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund supports Bay Area charities, as well as national and international projects promoting the arts, children and youth, democracy and civil society, domestic Jewish affairs, education, the elderly, the environment, health, Israel, social services, and violence prevention.
