Benny, a three-time University of California (Berkeley) All-American from 1927 to 1929, was one of the great triple threat players (runner, passer, kicker) of his time. Although he often thrilled spectators with long touchdown runs and all-around versatility, he may be best remembered as an active participant in an unforgettable incident in American football history. It occurred in the 1929 Rose Bowl classic that matched Cal against Georgia Tech, when he raced the length of the field to tackle teammate Roy Riegels, who was headed to the opponent’s goal line. Benny is a member of Cal’s Athletic Hall of Fame, as well as the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
