Bob led a group of investors to buy the Giants from Horace Stoneham in 1976, thereby saving the team from potentially being sold to a Canadian brewery and moving to Toronto. In 1985, Bob hired Al Rosen as general manager. Under Rosen’s tenure, the Giants promoted promising rookies such as Will Clark and Robby Thompson, and made canny trades to acquire such players as Kevin Mitchell, Dave Dravecky, Candy Maldonado, and Rick Reuschel. The highlight of Bob’s Giants’ tenure was the 1989 season, which culminated with the “Earthquake” World Series — a season in which the Giants won the National League West and defeated the Chicago Cubs, 4–1, in the NL Championship Series. Since selling the Giants, Lurie has focused his efforts on real estate through The Lurie Company. He is also involved in various philanthropic activities, which include the Louis R. Lurie Foundation. The Foundation’s mission is to actively improve the lives of youth and their families, heightening the skills that develop self-reliance, compassion, self-esteem, respect for diversity, and a strong desire to give back to others in the community. Further, the Foundation encourages mutual support, innovation, and an entrepreneurial spirit. Both Bob and Walter Haas, Jr., owner of the Oakland A’s, whose teams met in the 1989 World Series, belonged to Congregation Temple Emanu-El in San Francisco.
