Art’s popular San Francisco Chronicle column was the SportsCenter of its time, long before the days of 24-hour sports coverage. He was a writer, columnist and editor for more than 50 years. In his half-century of reporting on Bay Area greats, he claimed the most amazing athletic achievement he ever saw was pulled off by Willie Mays…on the golf course. The “Say Hey Kid” hit a low drive that ricocheted right back at him. In one fluid move, Mays snatched the ball out of the air, placed it back on the tee, teed off and sent the ball onto the fairway.
